About Brightsun

Brightsun is a project aimed at producing more positive, non-toxic social networks. It currently does so primarily by:

  • Focusing a social network on a particular domain or interest area that is positive and a source of commonality for its users
  • Having a stronger philosophy of avoiding certain content or behaviour that many social network tolerate or embrace. Most noticeably, rather than allowing sexual content but trying to restrict it to adults, Brightsun regards sexual content and nudity as private and not appropriate for social networks.

The name Brightsun is meant to convey a more focused, positive image. And bsun.dev was available as a domain name :)

Social Networks

Foodios

So far Brightsun has published one social network, Foodios, which is aimed at general discussions and sharing about all things food; it adds support for food-specific content such as Recipes to the existing micro-blogging offered by Bluesky as well as being a food-focused space.

Brightsun and the Atmosphere

Brightsun is building on the AT Protocol used by Bluesky, and using much of the Bluesky codebase for its apps and services.

Future Interests

These are some areas we're keen to explore:

  • Non-public social content on AT Protocol, while still following the above policies and using moderation accordingly. (This means we wouldn't be looking at end-to-end encryption for this content).
  • Building social networks for other focused domains & areas.
